I think I had seen the video of the lead single “Rehab” on what used to be a Saturday morning staple “The Chart Show” and all of this was enough to convince me to buy this album on the day it was released. I’d read a couple of reviews which had seen it as a modern take on the 60s girl group pop of The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las. There was quite a buzz about this follow-up album before its release. I knew that it had a jazz vibe about it but wasn’t sure whether it was for me. I knew that her debut album “Frank” (2003) had been very well received but hadn’t really sought it out (I did later). "Rehab" earned an MTV Video Music Awards nomination for Video of the Year.Back To Black -Amy Winehouse (Island 2006)īefore the release of this album, I was aware of Amy Winehouse but, probably like most people hadn’t really listened to her a great deal. In a diversion from the song's lyrics, the music video ends with Amy Winehouse in rehab. Later in the clip she is shown at a psychiatrist's office seemingly speaking to a therapist. It depicts Amy Winehouse's band playing while she sings. The music video for "Rehab" was directed by Phil Griffin. "Rehab" won the Ivor Novello Award in the UK for Best Contemporary Song. When the single was released, Amy Winehouse earned comparisons with the classic work of Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Shirley Bassey. It won the Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Those victories helped propel the album Back To Black to #2 on the US album chart. ![]() The song was a worldwide smash hit and was her breakthrough pop hit on both sides of the Atlantic peaking at #7 on the UK pop singles chart and #9 in the US. It refers to Amy Winehouse's management team's efforts to get her to enter alcohol rehabilitation, and her subsequent refusal. ![]()
